One of the big things I miss with the digital revolution is being able to share my old photos, and old family photos becoming damaged or lost.  Digital cameras really have improved things, it is now so easy to share photos, you can upload them to a social networking site, personal homepage or email them to friends and there are numerous of highly affordable photo printing websites, so you can also put them in albums and frames.

Having a digital copy of photos is a great way to back it up.  Depending on your generation I bet you have a draw full of negatives?  Remember how you’d get them in a separate compartment when you got your pictures developed?  These can take up lots of space, but also get damaged making getting replacements photos hard.  Having a digital copy, not only allows you to back up all your personal photos, but means you can share them in new and wonderful ways.

The question is – how can I turn my old photos into digital pictures?  In the past you would have the laborious task of scanning in photos, cropping them to size via your scanner – this would take forever!

However, some clever folk have created what are called, negative scanners.  These allow you to use your old photo negatives to create fantastic looking digital photos.  By scanning the negative, rather than photo you get a much higher quality picture.

There are different negative scanners, but the best one has to be Ion’s Film2SD negative scanner.  The reason I love this one so much is that you don’t even need a computer to use it!  It is a little bit more expensive (only just), but it means you can go over to your computer-phobic relatives and scan all their pictures in, without the hassle of taking a computer with you, or going backwards and forward to scan the photos.

A lot of scanners plug directly into a computer via USB.  The Ion Film2SD negative scanner uses SD cards to store the pictures as you go along and you can transfer these to your computer later via USB.  You could also take the SD card straight out and plug it into your digital picture frame!

A negative scanner would make a great present for any occasion….or why not treat yourself?  I have set up Film to SD Scanner.co.uk to help you decide which one you want and help you find where you can buy them online.  If you have any questions please pop me an email, at the address at the bottom of the page!
